Emily B. Visher, PhD and John S. Visher, MD, are the founders of the Stepfamily Association of America and are specialists in working with remarried families. They co-authored Stepfamilies: a Guide to Working with Stepfamilies and Stepchildren, have written articles and have given numerous workshops for mental health professionals and for stepfamilies. They are internationally known for their work and are the recipient of several distinguished awards. Emily Visher died in 2001. The following is taken from her obituary: Emily Browning Visher died on October 5, 2001 at home in Walnut Creek, CA. Born in Norwich, CT, raised at Britannia Beach, British Columbia, Canada, graduated with honors from Wellesley College, Mass., and received her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. Building on her practice as a psychologist and her personal experience, she and husband, John, co-founded the Stepfamily Association of America and became internationally known for books, articles, and workshops on stepfamilies. Recipient Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Alumnae Achievement Award Wellesley College, Distinguished Professional Contribution Award Marriage and Family Therapy Foundation, Distinguished Service Award National Council on Family Relations, Past President AAUW (AMOL Chapter). Loved family, friends, travel, life.
